Spartan Executive c/n 7W-2 NC13993 was a California resident when photographed at Point Magu, CA on 24.10.71.

NC13993 was registered to the EAA some 22 years ago and remains current. It is shown here at Pioneer Airport, Oshkosh, WI on 30.7.04 wearing the name "Mrs Mennen" on the cowling, this being previously carried by The Mennen Company's c/n 7W-34 which had suffered an accident in 1978. The cosmetics company family funded the restoration of both aircraft.

NC13997 c/n 7W-4 became XA-BEX and went on to Spain in January 1937. The amateurish paint job on the registration arouses the suspicion that it might have been painted on the photograph rather than on the aircraft. [A drawing in "Mundial en Espana" shows it as X-ABEX but this registration format was not generally used after 1934].

Prototype Executive c/n 7X-0 in its initial form. The long fin fillet and the enclosed fluted cowling were both dropped during redesign and rebuilding. The result was very similar to the production version.

The original cowling must have resulted in some overheating as a second circle of holes had been added around the propeller hub as an early modification.

Of the three Spartan Executives sold to Mexico for onward delivery to the Spanish Republicans, only one carried a civil registration in Spain. This was EC-AGM which served with Lineas Aereas Postales Espaholes (LAPE) and is believed to have been c/n 7W-1. It is thought that this aircraft was the one written off on 5.2.39 at Vilajuiga.
