The big 108 ft span Curtiss C-46 Commando with two 2,200 hp P&W R-2800 18-cyl 2-row radial engines made a significant contribution to military transport during WW2. With the big cargo doors seen here open they made ideal civil freighters postwar like C-46A-45-CU N608Z c/n 30328 of Zantop. On 30.12.64 it crashed in poor visibility on approach to Detroit killing all 4 on board.

A little extra available space enables us to use this photograph of an accident which has not appeared in Casualty Compendium. The location is Medellin, Colombia and the date 26.7.57. The aircraft is in the colours of S.A.M. and appears too have failed to rise as rapidly as the terrain at the end of the runway.

The raising of the Caravelle OD-AEM from the sea off Dahran where it had crashed in a sandstorm on 17th April 1964.
17.4.64 Middle East Airlines Sud Caravelle OD-AEM c/n 23 missing on flight from Beirut to Dhahran, was later found to have crashed at sea 10 nm SSE of Dhahran at 1928 hrs during its final approach in darkness and a sandstorm. All seven crew and 42 passengers on board died. Possible cause was a radio altimeter problem. TT 8771 hours.
