A Beaufighter TF.X, with torpedo, of 47 Sqn at Shandur (Canal Zone), Egypt, 1943. No 47 Sqn had just converted to Beaufighters and subsequently moved up to Portville, Tunis to commence torpedo strikes, becoming the first Beaufighter squadron to fly torpedo sorties from North Africa.

Junkers Ju 87B HK827, photographed at LG 86 in Egypt, 1942. The "property" of 39 Sqn, this aircraft was "found" and flown up from the desert by the CO Wg Cdr Mason. The Ju 87B was possibly the survivor of ten '87s manned by Italians that forced-landed in the desert following fuel starvation. In order to get the Stuka flying a Hudson tyre was fitted to one of the wheels. Initially the aircraft was sent to BARU Cairo for examination before being returned to 39 Sqn.
The picture of the Stuka airborne shows it coming in to land following a flight over Alexandria Harbour - made by prior arrangement with the Royal Navy!

This photograph of a Wellington was taken the day after the aircraft suffered brake failure following a night landing at RAF Luqa, Malta, in 1941. The Wellington is sprawled over a quarry at the end of the runway.

Servicing 39 Sqn Bristol Beaufort W6506 at LG 86 in January 1942. The squadron was at this time carrying out a training programme before commencing torpedo operations over the Mediterranean. LG 86 was located 60 miles south-west of Alexandria, Egypt.

A Bristol Beaufort of 47 Squadron photographed during an air test over the Suez Canal, Egypt. In 1942, 39 Squadron was temporarily disbanded and torpedo operations in the Middle East were taken over by 47 Squadron. The unit flew its first anti-shipping sorties on October 8, 1942. The Beaufort Is remained with the squadron until replaced with Beaufighter Xs in June 1943.

The futuristic British Burnelli OA-1, built by the Cunliffe Owen Aircraft company in 1938, seen at Luqa, Malta in July 1941. Camouflaged and carrying wartime civil markings, it was en route to the Free French Air Force in West Africa, flown by Jim Mollison. Registered G-AFMB, the OA-1 had been impressed into the RAF in May 1941.
