Supermarine Spitfire IX BS456 of 316 (Polish) Sqn, photographed in 1943, displays the range-extending belly tank beneath its fuselage. This aircraft was posted as missing on August 22, 1943, and was presumed to have been shot down by Focke-Wulf Fw 190s near Rouen.

Northrop P-61 Black Widow nightfighters of the 9th Air Force in flight over France. When the author landed his Spitfire on the base of a P-61 unit, his sleek fighter was regarded with some disdain by the Americans.

Noorduyn Norseman 43-5347 over English fields. The author found the type “slow and ponderous”, and remembers it for killing one of his unit’s line sergeants and injuring the pilot after an engine failure on take-off.
