Flying near Mont St-Michel off the Normandy coast, a P-47D Thunderbolt of the 373rd FG exhibits painted-out D-Day stripes on its upper surfaces. The author saw the role of the USAAF’s P-47s and P-51s changed from fighter to ground-attack bombers as the Allies advanced to the German border.
