  • The Zogling and SG 38 primary gliders were used in the pre-war years for the initial training of pilots for the Luftwaffe and postwar for the recreation of BAFO servicemen. Here a Zogling is carried back uphill for another flight by German trainees.

    Grunau Baby sailplanes in the Army hangars at Detmold on 15. 10.64. D-5359 has the German Oerlinghausen club's coat of arms on the rudder with Bergstadt (hill town) Oerlinghausen below it. The block D-5000 to 5999 identified the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen.

    The "Flight" photograph which started the "Extracts" enquiry into the BAFO. The Grunau Baby marked BAFO-52 and with tail code "12" is shown at Scharfoldendorf with RAF club members and the jeep towing vehicle, which appears to be marked "Air HQ Gliding Club".

    A DFS Meise, designed by Hans Jacobs, with the simple identity marking D-11 on the fuselage. Under the 1933 German regulations the left side of the tail carried a red band with a black swastika on a white circle.

    DFS Weihe D-11-184 launched at the Wasserkuppe by the crew at bottom left in a pre-war gliding competition.
    D-11-184 was the first DFS Weihe. The wings on this prototype had slightly less dihedral than production models. All DFS Weihes had slightly shorter noses and smaller cockpit canopies than the Jacobs-Schweyer version which was produced later in larger numbers. Again, the swastika had been retouched on the original negative.
