  • The Sopwith 2 was a 1 1/2 Strutter built in France by Liore et Olivier and numbers were assembled by the Japanese Army workshops and used for reconnaissance. A few examples such as J-TALO, J-TESW and J-TIVA.

    Ishibashi's racer J-TAEF was built partly from the remains of his three SPAD 13 airframes destroyed in a fire. The hand-built cowling for the lower-powered engine is apparent.

    This view of the Ishibashi racer J-TAEF shows the considerable differences from its SPAD origins. The deeper fuselage was due to additional fuel tankage to extend the range for racing.

    Dornier Komet III J-COFH is seen with a BMW VI engine with which all the remaining Japanese Komet IIIs were eventually re-engined. According to the register the only one originally fitted with a Lorraine engine was this aircraft.

    The Shirato 25 racer J-TAKL is seen before registration with Shirato's "bullseye' markings and '25' on the tail. It may have been inspired by the SPAD fighter to which it had many similarities.
