Northwest Orient Stratocruiser N74608 being raised from deep water in Puget Sound following its ditching on 2.4.56.
2.4.56 Northwest Airlines Boeing Stratocruiser N74608 c/n 15954 took off from Seattle-Tacoma airport for Portland and New York but severe vibration caused the pilot Capt Robert R Heard to ditch into Puget Sound off Point Robinson at 0814 PST. Capt Heard, four crew and 27 passengers survived but steward David V Raizey and four passengers died. Coastguard vessels and amphibious aircraft were quickly on the scene to pick up survivors. The aircraft sank in 395 ft of water and was raised (see photo) on 12.4.56. The vibration had been caused by open cowl flaps which the flight engineer had mistakenly called closed after take-off.
