The pre-production all-metal Stearman-Hammond Y used for initial trials had twin oval fins and rudders. The tailplane appears to be adjustable so that the angle of incidence could be varied for test purposes.

A close-up of NS73 which was supplied to the Bureau of Air Commerce with a longer top intake and large spats on the wheels, but retained the oval fins and rudders. The pitot mast is still in its original location above the windscreen and the name 'Hammond-Y' is just visible painted on the extended intake tunnel.

This view of NC15521 in the air shows well the twin boom layout, tapered and dihedralled mainplanes and tricycle undercarriage.

The well-polished early production Y-125, note the smaller intake, on display at the Los Angeles Air Show in 1937. This time the intake tunnel is inscribed 'Model-Y', while the placard to the left in the photo proclaims "Its easy to fly".

This view shoes a demonstration of the large-area flaps lowered to the 40' position. Note also the aileron mass balance and the transparent fairing at the back of the engine.

C/n 313 NC15527 in flight shows no changes although it has the 150 hp C-4S engine and any earlier aircraft that had the 125 hp C-4 were probably converted. With no load the undercarriage legs are fully extended but the fairings above the wings, into which the mainwheel legs rise when on the ground.
