Malev's llyushin IL-18 turboprop airliner HA-MOD being refuelled by Shell at Gatwick sometime prior to its crash near Le Bourget 23.11.62.
23.11.62 Malev llyushin IL-18 HA-MOD c/n 180002002 from Budapest and Frankfurt to Paris was making an ILS approach in poor visibility when it crashed six miles north of Le Bourget near village of Roissy-en-France (the site of the present Paris CDG airport). Capt Istvan Kapitany, seven crew and thirteen passengers were killed. The horizontal stabiliser had stalled on approach with 30 degrees of flap and full power, probably as a result of a G-load manoeuvre, and the aircraft began to enter a loop.

We did not quite have room in the last issue for this shot of Lufthansa Boeing 707-030B D-ABOM following its nosewheel collapse at Heathrow 14.8.62 - and we have now mislaid the note saying who e-mailed it to us!
14.8.62 Lufthansa Boeing 707-030B D-ABOM c/n 18060 had nosewheel failure and made emergency landing at London-Heathrow. Capt Walter Dorfel, 8 crew and 42 passengers evacuated safely but Stewardess Gudran Elsuesser injured when chute collapsed.

The burnt-out remains of the East African Airways DC-3 VP-KJT at Francistown airport after it had been sabotaged on 29.8.63. See entry under 29.8.62 above for details.
29.8.62 Readers may have had difficulty in tracing this as it had been filed in the wrong year in a bundle of news reports received by the Editor! On 29.8.63 East African Airways Douglas DC-3 VP-KJT c/n 16530/33278, sent to collect South African refugees from Bechuanaland to Tanganyika, was sabotaged at Francistown airport and was completely burnt out following explosions at 0215 while parked. Two of the refugees, "the most wanted men in South Africa" Arthur Goldreich and Harold Wolpe, had escaped from jail in Johannesburg disguised as priests 18 days earlier.

Trans-Canada Viscount 757 CF-THA which survived a ground collision with a Voodoo on 10.10.62.
10.10.62 Trans-Canada Air Lines Viscount 757 CF-THA c/n 218 had landed at Bagotville, Quebec, at c.2045 and was taxying clear of the runway when it was hit in the tail section by RCAF McDonnell CF-101B Voodoo 17452 of 416 Squadron which had been cleared too soon for take off. A passenger and a stewardess were killed on board the airliner, six occupants injured and Capt J O C Laver and ten other occupants unhurt. The crew of the Voodoo, F/O J S Whaley and navigator R S Jeffries, ejected safely on reaching 1200 ft and their aircraft crashed and was completely destroyed. The Viscount was later rebuilt and sold to Canadian Inspection and Test Co.

Viscount 828 JA8202 of All Nippon Airways crashed near Nagoya on a test flight on 19.11.62.
19.11.62 All Nippon Viscount 828 JA8202 c/n 444 was on a training flight at 3,500 ft when, in making a steep slow 360 degree turn to the right it stalled and spun in at Sanege-machi, Nishikamo-gun, near Nagoya at 1130, killing Capt Norio Yoshino and 3 (4?) crew.

Edgar Percival EP.9 G-APCS c/n 24 crashed in the sea in Gibraltar Harbour 24.8.62 when being flown by John Crewdson for filming sequences for "The Running Man".
24.8.62 The aircraft filming scenes for "The Running Man", flown by John Crewdson and which crashed into the sea in Gibraltar harbour was Percival EP.9 G-APCS c/n 24, owned by Fulair Ltd and on hire to Film Aviation Services. Crewdson was seriously injured and cameraman John Harris injured. The aircraft crashed into 15 feet of water from about 400 feet and was later salvaged by the RAF Marine Craft Section.
