The Rs IV in head-on view shows the sponsons on the hull, a feature that continued on Dornier flying boats into WW2. It was also used successfully by other designers on aircraft such as the Boeing 314 flying boat of 1938.

The Rs IV, with a similar layout to the Rs III but with a simpler cruciform tail, was the most successful Rs flying boat but after Germany's defeat it had to be scrapped at the war's end.

The Dornier Gs 1 (two 270 hp Maybach MB IVa 6-cyl upright in-line water-cooled engines) was under construction in Germany when WW1 ended and although it flew with Swiss registration CH-8 in 1919 it was destroyed under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. It led to production of the Dornier Do J Wal by CMASA in Italy.
The Gs I flying boat, with tandem push-pull Maybach engines on a parasol wing and with sponsons, was the forerunner of the long-lived Wal but it had to be destroyed in 1920.

A Dornier J Wal with early tail unit. Although unmarked it is identified by its BMW engines as Von Grunau's D-1422, ex G-EBQO of Courtney and N-25 of Amundsen.

Dornier's second fighter, the 1917 CL I, a two seat biplane with 160 hp Mercedes D III. It was all-metal and the first with a stressed-skin fuselage. A second version had a nose radiator.

The Cs I seen head-on shows the side radiators, although a nose radiator was also tried. The wire-braced wing was metal, fabric covered.

The Cs I rear fuselage looking aft, separated at the gunner's cockpit, the widest portion supporting the gun ring. The metal structure is seen to be pure monocoque without stringers.

In 1918 Dornier produced the Cs I two-seat twin-float seaplane. It was fitted with side radiators on its 195 hp Benz BzIIIb as seen in this photo, said to have been taken on its first flight.

A head-on view of the D I shows the strutless cantilever wings which broke up on a test flight, killing Hauptmann Reinhardt, commander of JG1. The fuel tank was not jettisonable.

The D I was on view in the Dornier museum at Friedrichshafen between the wars as seen here, but it was destroyed in WW2 by bombing.

The Dornier D I all-metal single-seat fighter biplane first flew on 4.6.18 with cantilever wings and fuel in a circular section tank between the undercarriage legs.

During WW1 Dornier also designed fighters, the first being the V 1 twin-boom single-seat biplane with 160 hp pusher engine. Metal with fabric covering, it crashed on its first flight in 1916.
