A rare visitor to the UK, Keflavik-based C-47J 150189 is seen here at Mildenhall during December 1967. Suitably covered in day-glo on the nose, wing-tips, rear fuselage and fin because of its operations in sparsely-populated Iceland, the aircraft was one of four former USAF SC-47Ds transferred to Navy charge at Keflavik in 1961.

52-2678 was one of six C-97Gs used by the 7405th SS. Although at first glance looking like a normal transport aircraft, it had been modified to the intelligence-gathering role by General Dynamics and sported a large radome midway along the underside of the fuselage. Normally to be found flying along the edges of the Soviet block, snooping on activities the other side of the Iron Curtain, these aircraft did make occasional appearances at Mildenhall.

The adoption of squadron tail-codes and a change to the presentation of serial numbers on the fin, both introduced by Tactical Air Command during the summer of 1968, improved immeasurably the enthusiast's ability to identify aircraft and their units. C-130E 63-7870 is seen here taxying at Mildenhall during the 36th TAS rotational deployment in early 1969.

No doubt to the trademark tune of squeaking brakes as well as the purring of its R-4360 radials, 941st MAG C-124C 51-0091 is seen here on the move at Mildenhall during the autumn of 1968. Note the crew-member whose head and shoulders can be seen standing in the roof hatch behind the cockpit. His job was to monitor wing-tip clearance from obstacles while the aircraft was taxying.

Normally based at McChord AFB, 941st MAG C-124C 51-0087 was one of sixteen Globemasters deployed to Mildenhall in July 1968. As their units had been mobilised at the beginning of that year, these aircraft already sported MAC fin-bands and fuselage titles but the wing identity (in this case the 349th MAW) appeared on the nosewheel door and the group badge was applied to the crew entry door. While based at Mildenhall the aircraft used the parking spots adjacent to the main road (the A1101), providing local enthusiasts with plenty of photographic opportunities.

Along with other aircraft from the squadron (EC-130Qs as well as EC-130Gs), 151888 'HL-20' of VQ-4 was a regular visitor to Mildenhall and other UK airfields from 1968 onwards. The drogue fitted to the end of the Very Low Frequency antenna cable, via which the aircraft was able to provide a communications link between US Navy submarines and higher headquarters, is visible under the rear cargo ramp.
