The former German Democratic Republic is also yielding some remarkable aircraft: the first to be recovered since reunification is the long-nosed Fw 190D-9, pulled from the depths of Lake Schwerin with much of its paint still pristine.

To follow the Sopwith Dove pictures in last month's Grapevine, here are some more photographs by IAN FRIMSTON of another current Skysport Engineering project: the Historic Aircraft Collection of Jersey's Nieuport 28. Being rebuilt to airworthiness by Skysport's Stephen Roberts and Martin Kimm, the ex-Tallmantz Collection aircraft has been fitted with new longerons and spars, although much of the rest of the primary structure is original. Power is provided by an incredibly noisy 160 h.p. Gnome Monosoupape rotary, which is reputedly louder than a Merlin and sounds like a series of bird-scarers going off in quick succession. Little is known of the Nieuport's history before its time with Tallmantz and the Wings and Wheels Museum in Florida; but it had its original wings clipped for pylon racing in the Twenties and is believed to have been used by Howard Hughes in the film Dawn Patrol.

Interesting aircraft continue to surface in the USSR: two views of Bell P-63 Kingcobra wreckage photographed last summer on Iturup, one of the Russian Kuril Islands north-east of Hokkaido. The site is a former Japanese wartime base - note the hangar in the background.

One more aircraft from the Fundacion Infante de Orleans collection in Madrid. Miles Falcon EC-ACB, which served in the Spanish Civil War and flew until 1957 (not 1955 as previously reported). Since this picture was taken, EC-ACB has been dismantled for storage pending restoration. Built in 1935, it is one of just three surviving Falcons.

One more aircraft from the Fundacion Infante de Orleans collection in Madrid. Its flagship, Fleet 2 EC-EYD, the oldest aeroplane on the Spanish register.

A 1919 photograph of BAT Bantam K-123; its remains have been stored for many years by the Shuttleworth Collection, but are soon to go to Holland for restoration to flying condition.
