In December 2009, it was announced that RAF Merlins were being transferred to the Royal Navy's Command Helicopter Force to replace retiring Sea King HC4 helicopters, which were due to leave frontline service in 2016. On May 25, 2018, the first of 25 converted Royal Marines Commando Merlin Mk4/4As were delivered to RNAS Yeovilton. They are due to remain in service until 2030
