When the Air Ministry was donated money for aircraft, the MAP was normally requested to mark details on a selected aircraft and the AID was notified of the “specially marked” aircraft on which stencilling was in 4in characters in yellow. Spitfire VB W3632 was presented by Bahrain in 1941.

This head-on view of a Gloster Meteor F.4 shows well the delineated walkway markings on the upper wing surfaces. The stencilling on the engine nacelles states “THIS FAIRING CONTAINS 130LB BALLAST”. Datum marks are noted at regular intervals a short distance back from the wing leading edges.

Lt Chandler of the USN poses atop a Supermarine Attacker. The aircraft is festooned in stencilling highlighting positions for slings and ballast in addition to warning people to KEEP AWAY FROM INTAKES WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING and so on.

The Lockheed Ventura II was delivered to the RAF from British contracts. When a further 200 supplied under Lend-Lease the RAF mark number was changed to IIA to differentiate between those built and inspected under British contract clauses and those built without British supervision.

Wartime photograph of Proctor IV NP184.
The AID issued a series of numbered sketches showing where markings should be placed. On a batch of Proctor IVs in the NP156-309 range (NP184 illustrated) the "TRESTLE HERE” marking was placed too far forward, causing damage to the rear fuselage when the aircraft was trestled.
