The Mil Mi-24 (Hind) anti-armour and assault transport helicopter is now serving in substantial numbers with the FA. Possessing a generally similar power plant arrangement to that of the Mi-8, the Mi-24 is, in fact, a somewhat smaller and lighter helicopter and is seen here with four UV-32-57 rocket pods on the underwing pylons. The twin rails on each wing-tip hardpoint each carry an AT-2 Swatter anti-tank missile but may presumably also carry the wire-guided Sagger missile.

The Tupolev Tu-22 (Blinder), which has now seen 10 years of service with the ADD and almost as long with the AV-MF, still forms an important item in the V-VS inventory, the example illustrated revealing a number of modifications recently introduced. The remotely-directed tail gun turret has apparently been deleted, this and its attendant radome having been replaced by a tail cone incorporating electronic “bulges" presumably associated with passive jamming or decoy equipment, and aft-looking bomb-damage-assessment camera ports now appear aft of the main undercarriage wells. The outline of the AS-4 Kitchen ASM may just be seen, this being the normal armament associated with the bulged radome (peculiar to the Blinder-B).

Although now being progressively phased out in favour of more advanced all-weather interceptors, the Yak-28P (Firebar), illustrated here, still possesses an important place in the inventory of the IAP-VO Strany and is unlikely to disappear from the manned interceptor force until late in the present decade.
