In AM. 4/97, Whitley K9032 is listed in the crash sites article. It was a Mk.IV, not a Mk.I, the 'V' having dropped off in conversion from the original register. Peter Green remembers listening to the aircraft circling for a couple of hours until it was light. It then made a good landing until the port wing caught on a small tree and swing the aircraft round into a hedge. The site was at Scartho, now the site of Grimsby General District Hospital. He went to see the aircraft and the photo turned up in a cupboard a few years ago!

  • The fairly anonymous Curtiss P-40E carries the number '127' and has a shark mouth nose, complete with eye. We think it is an American Volunteer Group aircraft fitted with a small drop (or ferry) tank. Unfortunately, the back contains no information. The number is over a painted-out roundel so it could be one of the aircraft diverted from the RAF contract which has lost its RAF roundels.

  • Hawker Sea Fury FB.11 of the Royal Netherlands Navy with wheels, flaps and hook down for landing. The query arises as to where the photographer was if it is landing on. More likely it was carrying out a fly-by along the side of the Karel Doorman.

  • Our recent publication of the history of No.53 Squadron brings us to the curiously-named airfield of Coucou. The photo shows No.53's R.E.8s and hangars. It appears that advantage has been taken of a large building, a facility few airfields of the time enjoyed.

  • Регистрационный номер: L7528

Mention was made in AM.4/97 of arresting gear for bomber airfields. Peter Green has sent in this photo of Lancaster L7528 fitted with a hook for trials at Farnborough. The arrester wires can be seen crossing the runway below the aircraft.

The first four Roc Is arrived at Dyce on March 13, 1940, wearing covered Finnish insignia. The Winter War ended on the same day and the Air Ministry issued a standstill order to stop all deliveries.
Photo of Blackburn Rocs at Dyce early in 1940. In AM 3/97 we mentioned the delivery of Blenheims from Dyce where the roundels were overpainted with white disks, on which the Finnish swastika would be superimposed on arrival. These Rocs, complete with Finnish 'RO' serials, have similar disks but the Winter War ended before they could be delivered.

Vildebeest K2933 suffered engine failure on 30 August 1938 and landed on a Malayan beach, overturning on the soft sand. It was dismantled and returned to Seletar but was judged to be beyond economical repair.
