  • Регистрационный номер: D-ALAF

An unusual contribution this issue comes from our German specialist Peter Gerhardt. The photograph shows the wreck of the Karl Herfurtner DC-4 D-ALAF at Dusseldorf on 3.11.57 and was taken by Peter only a few hours after the crash which was described on p.98/114. Three days beforehand Peter had received a blank ticket for this inaugural charter flight to New York but his train from Frankfurt to Dusseldorf was late and he missed the flight as a result.
3.11.57 Luftreederei Karl Herfurtner Douglas DC-4 D-ALAF c/n 7459 hit building and crashed in flames into a garden at Dusseldorf after takeoff for Reykjavik and New York. Reported loss of power due to simulated two-engine failure on take-off for crew training purposes. Of the 7 crew and 3 passengers on board six were killed including Karl Herfurtner, his stewardess daughter Resi, and chief pilot Karl-Heintz Stahnke, whose daughter Doris survived with burns. A woman on the ground was killed and two others injured.
