The Sensitive Altimeter as used on Britannia G-AOVD, this example showing a reading of 740 ft precisely. The very small size of the 10.000 ft pointer is apparent here and combined with a high workload and poor weather is believed to have caused the crash on 24.12.58 near Christchurch.
24.12.58 BOAC Bristol 175 Britannia G-AOVD c/n 13235 on a CofA renewal test flight from London was descending in thick fog on approach to Hum Airport when it crashed at Sopley Farm, Winkton, killing Capt John E Jackson and nine crew, seriously injuring three others. At 1153 hrs Capt Jackson had requested permission to descend from 12,000 to 3,000 ft but after three minutes the aircraft hit the ground. The crew having shown no appreciation of the proximity of the ground, it was thought that a misreading of the sensitive altimeter by the Captain and First Officer, with no external visual contact, was the likely cause. This type of altimeter with three pointers requires great care in reading as the very small 10,000 ft pointer could easily be misread or obscured (see photo).Самолёты на фотографии: Bristol Britannia / Type 175 - Великобритания - 1952
