The Curtiss P-1 series dated from 1925 and 154 were built to equip pursuit squadrons of the USAAC. The last five were completed with 500 hp Curtiss V-1400 engines and the aircraft illustrated was 25-420 used for development work with a turbo-charger at McCook Field. It carried the test number XP431 and had a long test probe.

Регистрационный номер: N9789 A typical photograph of personnel of the Fleet Air Arm in front of a Fairey IIID. N9789 was based at Leuchars from 1925 and then went aboard Hermes for a year in 1926/27 before returning to Leuchars. From left to right, a RAF mechanic, a RN lieutenant, a RAF pilot, another RAF mechanic and a sailor whose cap band reads 'HMS Argus'. The temporary hangars suggest that this photo was taken at an armament camp at Novar.

An anonymous Junkers Ju 87D in RAF markings in the Middle East. In addition to the underslung bomb rack, it has racks for several types of bombs up to the 1,102-lb SC 500 (500 kg). The small fairings at the top of the undercarriage legs were for small propellers for the dive-bombing sirens but have been blanked off.

The US branch of the Fokker company changed its name to Atlantic for PR reasons. In 1927, it produced the Atlantic XLB-2 twin-engined bomber for the USAAC which allotted number 26-210. The design was based on the familiar Fokker Tri-motors except that the nose engine had been replaced by a gun position with a bomb-aiming window below it. There were hatches for dorsal and ventral guns but the design was not accepted. The 'LB' and 'HB' classification was soon dropped and all bombers received simple 'B' numbers.

A Boeing F4B-4 at Pensacola Naval Air Station in 1934. The 92 F4B-4s saw service aboard US Navy carriers and with the Marine Corps. Some were supplied to training units, of which Pensacola was the largest. Oddly, one extra aircraft (9719) was built by the Marines from spare parts. This photograph appears to show 9252.

Регистрационный номер: K4578 Singapore III K4578 is lifted by a floating crane off Arzew, near Oran, in Algeria. Anew was a French Navy seaplane station and this flying boat of No.210 Squadron was one of several based there during a period of the Spanish Civil War when merchant ships of various nationalities were being attacked by unidentified (i.e. Italian) submarines. The detachment lasted from September to December 1937.

Curtiss SOC-1 9856 was the first of a batch of 135 Seagulls for the US Navy. Deliveries began in November 1935 and the SOC-1 saw widespread service aboard battleships and cruisers. The prototype XO3C-1 from March 1934 had open cockpits and an amphibious central float but for production aircraft a cabin was fitted and the designation changed to XSOC-1. Powered by a 550 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340-12 radial, many SOCs survived replacement by Kingfishers during World War Two.

Регистрационный номер: SR28, G-AGTU, RRAF28, VP-YNO, ZS-IZK, ZS-UKB The serial SR28 indicates that this is an Auster J/1 Autocrat used by the Southern Rhodesian Air Force. SR28 was originally registered to Sir George Kenning / Kennings Aviation as G-AGTU and went to the SRAF in August 1948, later becoming RRAF 28 in October 1954. It was sold in 1955, becoming VP-YNO, based at Bulawayo. After being written-off on 30th October 1954, it was rebuilt in South Africa as ZS-IZK, later ZS-UKB. In July 2001 it was seen at East London painted as SR28. This raises the question as to whether the photograph shows a SRAF aircraft or the current reconstruction! Four new J/5s were also delivered in 1949.

The Sud-Ouest S.O.30P was designed at Cannes during the German occupation of France and after the end of the war it emerged as a passenger aircraft named Bretagne. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800s, some were used by the Armee de l'Air. No.44 is seen here in more innocent times parked at Blackbushe, the road in the foreground being the A-30. Not even a hedge bars access.

Регистрационный номер: VX190, D-YBAR, G-ALUA The Brunswick LF 1 Zaunkonig VX190 first flew on 3rd May 1944 as D-YBAR, having been designed by Braunschweig Technische Hochschule. It was found by the occupation forces at Bad Hamburg and was eventually shipped to Farnborough in September 1947 for investigation of its slow-flying characteristics, becoming VX190. It was sold to the Ultra Light Aircraft Association in May 1949 and became G-ALUA. It still survives.

Регистрационный номер: N187 The Hawker Hedgehog was a three-seat reconnaissance aircraft for operation from aircraft carriers. Designed to Specification 37/22 it was of wooden construction, fabric covered, and was powered by a 398 hp Bristol Jupiter IV. N187 was flown in August 1924 and was tested at Martlesham Heath and, as a seaplane, at Felixstowe. The wings folded and, unusually, it had landing flaps on both wings.
