The Grumman Martlet entered service with the FAA in September 1940 with 804 Sqn. The carrier-borne fighter was the British version of the US Navy and Marine Corps F4F-3.

A submarine crew’s view of a Supermarine Walrus spotter-reconnaissance amphibian. In addition to carrying out antisubmarine patrols the “Shagbat” was used extensively for air-sea rescue duties.

A Fairey Albacore carrying an 18in 1,610lb torpedo. On November 17, 1942, Sub-Lt James Bridge, flying a similarly-armed 820 Sqn Albacore, sank the German submarine U-331.
