    Westland Wallace K3570 of 501 (County of Gloucester) Sqn, Auxiliary Air Force, during gunnery practice, with a towed banner target tempting the observer/gunner in the rear cockpit. The unit received its first Wallaces in January 1933.

    Luft Hansa’s massive Junkers-G 38 first flew in to Croydon on July 1,1931. This is the second aircraft, D-2500. The author saw one low over her house in company with the airship Graf Zeppelin.

    Surrey Flying Services operated de Havilland D.H.83 Fox Moths from Croydon, and the author flew in them. This one, G-ABUT, won the 1932 King’s Cup Race, as a legend on its fuselage testifies.

    The author spotted Spartan Three-Seater G-ABWV, belonging to Rollason Aviation of Croydon, on a couple of occasions. It crashed and burned at Grantham, Lincolnshire, on September 28, 1933.

  • Author Ann Welch in more recent years, in the 1960s, in a Schleicher ASK-14 powered sailplane. She learned to fly with the Barnstaple Aero Club, North Devon, in 1934 - the year after she completed the diary which sparked off this feature.
