    Boulton Paul redesigned and modified the air intakes of D.H. Vampire 1 TG276 to accommodate the Rolls-Royce Nene engine in place of a D.H. Goblin. No Nene-powered Vampires were built in Britain, but 80 were produced in Australia: TG276 passed to Rolls-Royce on January 6, 1950.

    Production Boulton Paul Defiant TT Mk 1 DR972 at Pendeford on August 27, 1942 showing target-towing gear and observer’s canopy in place of the turret. Transferred to the Admiralty on October 23, 1942, it was at Macrihanish in July 1943 and ended its useful life at Coimbatore in December 1945 when the undercarriage collapsed.

    Boulton Paul's P.92/2 V3142 was a half-scale manned flying model of a proposed three-seat fighter with four 20mm Hispano cannon in a turret. The wooden machine was built by Heston Aircraft and flown to Pendeford, where it was photographed on May 17, 1941. With cancellation of the P.92, it was stored for some time before being scrapped.

    The first prototype of the Balliol trainer, VL892, was flown with a Bristol Mercury piston engine until a Rolls-Royce Dart propeller turbine was available. Ironically, the Balliol went into production with a Rolls-Royce Merlin. Shown here in January 1947, during one of the worst winters in living memory, VL892 was later reengined with an Armstrong Siddeley Mamba turboprop.

    Built to specification E.27/46 for research into delta-wing aerodynamics, the Boulton Paul P.111 VT935 had a Rolls-Royce Nene engine. Chief test pilot Ben Gunn undertook taxying trials on Pendeford’s grass runway on May 5, 1950, but the first flight took place at Boscombe Down. The little delta is preserved at the Midland Air Museum, Coventry.

    Lockheed Hudson N7251 after fitment of its Boulton Paul C Mk IIA turret on March 4, 1940; in the background is Hudson N7244, which crashed near Leuchars on August 23, 1940, while N7251 became instructional airframe 4266M in October 1943.
