Louis Bleriot, grandson of the first man to fly the Channel, failed in his attempt to repeat the family feat on July 25, 1998, the 79th anniversary of the pioneering flight, after apparently getting the controls of the wing-warping monoplane comprehensively crossed. Flying an original Bleriot XI loaned by the Salis collection, the 54-year-old banker ended up in fresh water near Calais, having failed to reach even the French, let alone the English, coast - journey's end being a lake just outside the town.

With the fuselage complete and the wings covered, the airframe now awaits the arrival from Filton of the 440 h.p. Bristol Jupiter engine. The aircraft will be on display at the Farnborough Airshow, where it crashed in 1964. This time, barring strong winds, it will remain on the ground.

Регистрационный номер: G-BIVZ Tiger Club display pilot Chris Wilkins was killed in Druine Turbulent G-BIVZ at the Swanton Morley air show on August 9, 1998. Eyewitnesses, including a Vintage News contributor, saw the Rollason-built ultralight dive into a field towards the close of the famous four-Turbulent display. Chris Bellhouse, chairman of the Tiger Club, says “Chris Wilkins was a very experienced pilot and was very well liked by people at the club. There is obviously a very sombre mood here.”
