Vickers’ Viscount was the world’s first turboprop airliner and was destined to achieve worldwide sales. Here, the prototype lands in 1948; the type appeared every year until 1959, and one even flew on a public day in 1988.

Регистрационный номер: G-ALCV, VZ724 Cierva’s massive and outlandish Air Horse helicopter was powered by a single Rolls-Royce Merlin driving the three rotors. Appearing in 1948 and 1949, it was abandoned following the crash of the first of two prototypes in June 1950.

Регистрационный номер: RH809 Bristol Brigand RH809 with bombs beneath the fuselage and wings made the type's first and last Farnborough appearance in 1948. Brigands had been shown in 1946 and '47 at Radlett.

The first Handley Page Hermes IV at Farnborough in 1948. The type served with BOAC for almost four years before the last 18 survivors of 25 were sold to independent operators. The Naiad-Lincoln testbed is flying past in the background.

The static display was rather spread out in 1948 - even the two A.W.52s were separated, but their cranked flying-wing planform made them easily recognisable. The area nowadays occupied by the exhibition halls is at the right of the picture.

First appearing at Farnborough in 1948 with a D.H. Gipsy Queen engine, the Scottish Aviation Pioneer STOL aircraft entered production with an Alvis Leonides radial and appeared at numerous SBAC displays until 1961.

Регистрационный номер: PA143 Supermarine’s Seagull was an attempt to replace the antiquated Sea Otter and Walrus biplane amphibians. With variable-incidence wing and a Rolls-Royce Griffon driving contra-props, it was an advanced design but failed to gain an order after appearing at the 1948, ’49 and '50 shows.
