  • Broad flew many combat hours in the Sopwith Camel, which he regarded as uncomfortable. Seen here is Maj E.W. Green VC DSO, the CO of 44 Sqn, taking off from Hainault Farm in Essex. Broad was flying with this squadron when he was demobbed in June 1919.

    Even though he found the Sopwith Camel uncomfortable, Broad nevertheless purchased one after the war to race and make exhibition flights. Built in 1918 by Boulton and Paul, the fighter was registered G-EAWN; Broad’s first flight in it took place on November 29, 1919.

  • On July 13, 1916, Broad crashed in a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny while low flying near Cranwell aerodrome. The circumstances of the crashed Jenny seen here are unknown.

    Broad flew this captured Albatros D V on November 3, 1918, finding it “comic to fly owing to its all-balanced controls”. D2359/17, flown by Leutnant Homarth of Jasta 23, was brought down by an R.E.8 of 13 Sqn flown by Lt Belway. The aircraft is seen here wearing its British number G144.

    Broad flew many hundreds of hours instructing on Avro 504s at RNAS Chingford. On June 7,1918, he performed 31 consecutive loops in (according to his logbook) Avro 504C 8601. Seen here is sister aircraft Avro 504C 8600 of RNAS Redcar.

    Broad clocked up many more hours on Avro 504Ks after the war. One of his regular mounts was this example, G-EAWM, owned by the joyriding Welsh Aviation Company Ltd.

    Broad flew Sopwith Triplane N5351 while on a course at the Fighter Pilots’ Flying School at Fairlop. He found the Triplane’s flying characteristics delightful, but commented in his logbook that it did not loop very well.

    Bristol M.1C C5002 of No 2 Flying School, Marske. While on a course at Marske in 1918, Broad flew sister aircraft C5003. He found it simple to handle, but rather difficult to loop.

    A poor but rare picture of Sopwith Pup N6203, in which Broad shot down his second Albatros, seen during its later service with the Seaplane Defence Flight, Dunkerque, by which time it had been named Mina.

  • Photographed immediately after being bungee-launched is one of the two D.H.52 gliders built for the 1922 Daily Mail £1,000 Gliding Competition held at Itford, Sussex. Broad flew one, E.D.C Herne flew (and crashed in) the other.

    Hubert Broad made the first flight of the D.H.56 Hyena from Stag Lane on May 17, 1925. Only two prototypes were built, the type losing out to the Armstrong Whitworth Atlas in the competition to meet Air Ministry Specification 33/26.

    As Long as it is Broad: This photograph of the nose of the D.H.54, or "Highclere" as the machine has been officially named, showing Capt. Broad getting into the cockpit, gives a good idea of the size of this latest de Havilland air liner, which is fitted with a Rolls-Royce "Condor'' engine of 650 h.p.
    Hubert Broad scaling the massive 68ft 2in-span D.H.54 Highclere G-ABKI (G-EBKI ???) to reach the cockpit. Stretching away in front of him is the 650 h.p. Rolls-Royce Condor engine. Broad made the first flight of the one-and-only D.H.54 on May 25, 1925.

    The D.H.54 Highclere 12-passenger airliner was designed for use by Imperial Airways, but in 1926 the company decided not to carry passengers in single-engined aircraft, so the D.H.54 never entered service with the airline. Plans to use the Highclere as a freighter came to naught after it was destroyed in a hangar collapse during a snowstorm at Croydon in February 1927.
