The KC-10A that flew as "Tent 36” for the mission described in this article, operated by the 79th Air Refueling Squadron, an Air Force Reserve unit.
The first KC-10A Extender is seen in the photographs on these pages during its Qualification Operational Test and Evaluation at Yuma. It will shortly be entering a further phase in its evaluation programme, flying from Barksdale AFB, the designated base for the future USAF KC-10A fleet.
The KC-10A, uniquely among existing tanker aircraft, was designed from the start to be able to refuel - without modification and on a single mission, other aircraft using either the flying-boom or probe-and-drogue method. The two systems are seen in use here, with receiving aircraft an AV-8B Harrier II
First aerial refuelling tests with the USAF/McDonnell Douglas KC-10 hooked up with a C-5, took place near Edwards AFB on October 30, 1980.

The newest type in the SAC inventory is the McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender, seen here in a trial hook-up with a B-52G from the 93rd Bomb Wing.
