The last two of a total of eight McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantoms of the 20th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Wing, to undergo programmed depot maintenance (PDM) at EADS Manching plant departed back to the USA on January 29, 2002. The aircraft, 72-1231/HO and 72-1257/HO, departed for their transatlantic flight from Hopsten AH and flew direct with USAF tanker support to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. From there they routed via Tinker AFB, Okla, then on to their base at Holloman AFB, NM, the journey taking a total of 13.8hr. Twenty-four Luftwaffe Phantoms are based at Holloman and operated in US marks for pilot training, of which eight were due for PDM between 1998 and 2001. The USAF, which is responsible for the maintenance of the US-based Phantoms granted the contract to EADS. The picture shows one of the F-4Fs, 72-1231/HO, over Germany

An impressive line-up of Phantoms. These aircraft constitute the unmanned fleet which are next in line to run the gauntlet of being shot at by missiles. They are based ata facility a few miles away from the main airfield at Tyndall and use a dedicated runway. Note that the first two aircraft are more recent conversions, as they do not have the fairing on the spine, unlike the third aircraft, which was used to house transponder equipment. This equipment is now housed in the nose.

Phantoms forever!

This Mitsubishi-assembled F-4EJ is one of over 90 aircraft upgraded to F-4EJkai standard. It is on the strength of 301 Hikotai.
Japan is one of only seven countries still flying the venerable Phantom and intends to replace its F-4EJ Kai fleet from 2010.

As part of the drawdown of the Luftwaffe's McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom fleet the service is in the process of preparing four of the fighters with special colours. The first to be painted at Jever in Lower Saxony, northern Germany was 38+10, which has been resprayed in the Norm 72 scheme worn be the fleet during the 1970s and into the early 1980s. The aircraft is seen shortly after roll-out on November 22. The three other aircraft will have the Norm 90J (the current scheme, on 37+22) and Norm 81AJB (the grey/grey scheme, on 38+33), while 37+01 will receive 'Phlyout Special' colours. Germany will hold a retirement ceremony for its Phantom at Wittmund, also in Lower Saxony, on June 29, 2013.

With the end of Luftwaffe McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom operations planned for June 2013, the last scheduled maintenance for the type has recently been completed. F-4F ICE 38+64 (c/n 4782, FMS 72-1274) of Jagdgeschwader 71 'Richthofen' was the final one to emerge from the maintenance hangar at Wittmundhafen AB after an Hourly Post-flight Inspection (HPO) in early January. To mark the milestone it was decorated with a golden shooting star and 'Goldene HPO' titles on both sides of the fuselage. Following the retirement of the Phantom by Jagdgeschwader 71 the wing will continue to fly the Eurofighter Typhoon.

F-4F 38+49 of JG71 'Richthofen' first flew on July 3, 2008, from Wittmund in this scheme marking both the 50th anniversary of the Phantom's first flight and 35 years in Luftwaffe service. The aircraft made a final deployment to Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, for an exercise between October 13 and November 3, 2008, and was due to be retired soon afterwards.

Israel
The F-4E Phantom is now one of the most important weapons in the Israeli inventory, and allegedly equips three squadrons of Heyl Ha'Avir. Some Israeli aircraft, such as that illustrated here, appear to have the barrels of their M-61A-1 rotary cannon extended forward beneath the nose.
На снимке - тройка самолетов из 107-й эскадрильи "Knights of the Orange Tail".

The Hellenic Air Force in cooperation with Aegean Airlines organised a unique event on November 6, 2015 to celebrate the country's independence day. Aegean Airlines A320 SX-DGY took off from Athens International Airport, carrying 100 people, all winners of a competition, for a special rendezvous over the Aegean Sea. At the same time three two-seat aircraft, a Mirage 2000-5 Mk II, a Block 52+ F-16D and a F-4E AUP took off from Tanagra Air Base. Each jet had a veteran air force pilot who flew the same types during their career on board. The four aircraft rendezvoused north of Mikonos for a unique photo opportunity. After several orbits, the formation headed towards Tanagra, made two low passes and landed. The Airbus passengers then visited the resident 114 Combat Wing’s static display.

Turkey

McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in the late 1950s experienced tailplane stall at low speeds on take-off and approach when the relatively small-area, thin-sectioned all-flying tailplane could not cope aerodynamically with the downloads it generated. The solution was to install a fixed leading-edge slat on the tailplane itself
