There were no special prototypes of the Blackburn Roc and the first aircraft, L3057, was first flown on December 23,1938, by Flt Lt H. J. Wilson. After contractor's trials at Brough, L3057, in company with L3058 and L3059, went to A&AEE Martlesham for handling and armament trials.

Blackburn Roc fleet fighter L3183, another of HMS Phoenix’s complement, was photographed on November 28, 1942. This aircraft was delivered to No 8 MU, Little Rissington, in June 1940. The Roc was the first turret fighter to serve in the FAA.

Both two-seater fighters built by Boulton Paul and equipped with multi-gun power-operated turrets made by the same company, the Defiant and the Blackburn-designed Roc (shown) are in production respectively for Home Defence and Fleet Air Arm use. The Defiant had a Rolls-Royce Merlin and the Roc a Bristol Perseus.

NOT-SO-MYTHICAL. According to the encyclopaedia, the roc was a fabulous bird of the East, so huge that it bore off elephants to feed its young. The Blackburn Roc, of which details are now released, is neither fabulous nor gigantic, but it is obviously a very efficient two-seater fighter for the Fleet Air Arm. It closely follows the lines of the Skua, and the engine is a Bristol Perseus. Either a retractable wheel undercarriage or a float undercarriage may be fitted.

Roc L3084 again, showing well the Boulton Paul Type A Mk II power-driven gun turret. Four 0-303in Browning guns were mounted in pairs and the turret could be rotated 360°; the guns could be elevated up to 85° above the horizon.

Roc L3084 was later converted to a target tug. The idea of a turret fighter bringing its guns to bear in broadside attacks proved unsound and Rocs were used as fighters only briefly. Relegated to target-towing duties, most Rocs had disappeared by the summer of 1943.

    Истребитель "Рок" I из 778-й эскадрильи, 1940 г.
Blackburn Roc L3084. This two-seat Fleet trainer first entered FAA service in February 1940, with 806 Sqn at Eastleigh. The type ended its days as a target tug and trainer and the last examples were retired in August 1943. Powered by a 890 h.p. Bristol Perseus XII radial engine, the Roc had a range of about 480 nautical miles.
Structurally similar to the Skua, the Roc had a widened fuselage to accommodate the Boulton Paul gun turret and the mainplane had 2 deg dihedral outboard of the centre section.

  • Aviation Historian 28 / M.Russell - Bring Out the Big Guns

Designed to fulfil a similar role to the Defiant, but constricted by stringent naval requirements and its less powerful radial engine, the Blackburn Roc was fitted with the same Boulton Paul Type A four-gun turret as its RAF counterpart. By the time it flew in 1938, British interest in 37mm armament for air-to-air fighting was on the wane.

The Roc was intended to meet Specification 26/36 as a twin-float seaplane fighter. Seen here is one of the two trials machines, L3059, after being fitted with floats at Blackburns Dumbarton factory in October 1939. L3059 is painted with camouflaged upper surfaces and sky on the lower half of the fuselage and underside of the starboard wing. The underside of the port wing was painted black. Roc L3059 was water-tested at Helensburgh, not far from the Dumbarton factory. The trials were not successful and the aircraft crashed while taking off on December 3, 1939.
