Supermarine Highspeed Spifire
Supermarine - Highspeed Spifire - 1938 -

View of Spitfire K9834 modified as the Type 323 High-Speed Spitfire at Eastleigh, Southampton in 1939. Notice the blunt wingtips, the streamlined Perspex windscreen, the four-bladed fixed-pitch wooden propeller and the tail-skid in place of the usual tailwheel. Later restored to a more conventional configuration, it served throughout the war as a station "hack" with PRU.
During the winter of 1937/8 the 48th production Spitfire, K9834, was cleaned up and fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin III (sprint Merlin) which, on test, recorded 2,160 h.p. with 27lb boost. The four-blade, course pitch wooden propeller was 10ft in diameter.
The special Supermarine Spitfire (Rolls-Royce Merlin) used by the R.A.F. for high-speed research. Only a limited amount of information is available on this aircraft, but it is believed that since this picture was taken the cooling system has been improved.
The Speed Spitfire was actually built from the 48th production airframe, Spitfire K9834. Mutt Summers made N.17's maiden flight, from Eastleigh, on November 11, 1938.

A British quartet impressively grouped: the Speed Spitfire, Hurricane, Oxford and Wellington.
The Speed Spitfire, N.17 was originally Spitfire I K9834, the 48th production aircraft. It is seen here at Eastleigh. Powered by a sprint Merlin, a much-modified Merlin Mk III, N.17 was first flown on November 11, 1938. An attempt on the world speed record was cancelled after Ernst Udet raised the speed to 469 m.p.h. in a Messerschmitt Bf 109R. N.17 was rebuilt by Heston Aircraft and ended its days as a hack with the PRU at Benson.
