Благодаря возможности принимать топливо в воздухе, продолжительность полета E-4B лимитирована только емкостью маслобаков двигателей. На снимке - дозаправка E-4A от McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender. В чрезвычайной ситуации в боевую готовность для обеспечения E-4B приводится весь парк заправщиков KC-10A и KC-135. На борту E-4B штатно находится сменный экипаж: командир, второй пилот, штурман и бортинженер.

Offutt AFB, home to the US Strategic Command, also hosts US Navy E-6B Mercury TACAMO aircraft on alert. TACAMO, meaning take charge and move out, is a relay mission between the National Command Authority and US Navy ballistic missile submarines. The E-6B, seen on the right of this picture, can also provide command and control of America's land-based missiles and nuclear-armed bombers.

Boeing E-4B 73-1676 (c/n 20682) of the 1st Airborne Command and Control Squadron of the 55th Wing, based at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, on approach to RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, on June 18, 2013. The E-4B has recently undergone the Block 1 upgrade to improve its survivability and mission capabilities. It includes the blanking of all fuselage windows to improve resistance to electromagnetic pulse, and to shield those inside from the thermal effects of nuclear detonations. The recent visit of 73-1676 to the UK, in connection with the 39th G8 Summit held at Lough Erne Golf Resort in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, was the first since the upgrades had been integrated on the airframe.

E-4B 73-1677 (c/n 20683) made its maiden flight on September 11, 1973 and was delivered to the US Air Force on October 3 that year. Today, over 38 years later, 73-1677 still looks resplendent in its blue and white livery thanks to the maintenance personnel assigned to the 55th Wing based at Offutt AFB.
