??? - Tehran Revealed /Airport view/
An IRIAF Ilyushin Il-76TD in an interesting camouflage scheme about to touch down at Mehrabad. It is believed to have been on a test flight after receiving attention at the Pars Aviation Service Company. The air force's transport fleet of Candids, estimated to number six or seven, belong to the 73rd Tactical Airlift Squadron at the 7th TAB in Shiraz. Two AWACS Il-76s reside at Tehran and are former Iraqi Air Force aircraft that were flown here to escape the bombing campaign aimed at removing Saddam Hussein’s forces from Kuwait in 1991. Iraq had expected to retrieve them after the conflict, but the Iranian Government decided to keep them for its own forces.
One of the few remaining airworthy Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) Grumman F-14A Tomcats coming in to land at Tehran. Of the 79 delivered, only 12 are believed to be currently active. It is understood that attempts are being made to restore a further 30 to service, though spare parts shortages caused by the US arms embargo are making this difficult. This example, 3-6058, has a '6' in a circle on the tail to indicate it is assigned to the 82nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) detachment at Tactical Air Base 6 at Bushehr. The aircraft pictured was most likely visiting Mehrabad for overhaul and/or upgrade at the Iranian Aircraft Industries' complex.
IRIAF Boeing 747-13KSFI, 5-8103, is pictured lining up on one of Mehrabad's two runways. It is one of eleven 747-100s and five -200s supplied to the air force during the last Shah's reign, which ended in 1979. All of them were delivered as tanker/transports, and visible on this example is the air-to-air refuelling boom under the tail. This 747 is one of two that have since had their booms removed and been converted solely for passenger use. Only three or four of these ‘Jumbos' are believed to be operational
A number of Iranian airlines operate Tupolev Tu-154s, including Caspian Airlines, which has four of the type and is based in Tehran.
Six MIG-29UB trainer versions of the Fulcrum serve with the IRIAF, in addition to 30 single-seaters. Some of the fleet comprises former Iraqi aircraft, while others were acquired from Russia in 1993. Two units operate the type, the 11th TFS from Mehrabad and the 23rd TFS at Tabriz.
This colourful Dornier 228 is one of four operated by Iran Aseman Airlines for the National Cartographic Centre. The tail features an impression of a DC-3 overlaid on a theodolite. These aircrafts are used as aerial photographic platforms for the production of maps.
Out of the 180 F-5s, made up of A, B, E and RF-5 variants, purchased by Iran only 20 are believed to be in airworthy condition. Examples of the type are based at Dezful, Isfahan, Mashad and Tabriz. Iran is converting F-5s into an indigenous twin-tailed version known as the Saeghe (Thunder). To date, only five of these have been seen, though more are likely to be converted.
One of the more modern types operated by the Iranian Government is this Airbus A321, EP-AGB. It was acquired second-hand and delivered on November 23, 2005.
