When this study of HMS Ravager was taken it was probably going flat out, at about 18 knots. A Grumman Avenger has just landed, and its flaps are still down. The yellow-jacketed batsman has left his platform and is walking towards the aircraft. The radar aerial and wing locking post of the Barracuda from which the photo was taken are visible in the foreground.

A brace of Barras present their singular shapes to the camera. The shoulder-wing configuration was unusual among carrier-borne aircraft at the time.

Having come in too fast, too high and too far to starboard, a Barracuda goes round again, retracting its undercarriage. The Isle of Arran is visible in the background.

This Fairey Barracuda, either P9887 or BV680, has caught the wire and bounced up. Cunningham may be seen standing in the background with his bats in the “cut” position. This picture was taken on December 17, 1943, the 40th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first flights.

What happened when you missed the wires. A Barracuda hits the cable barrier, which smashes its propeller and tears off the radiator
