Jim Conway, the pilot of Qantas Otter amphibian VH-EAW Kikori, was kicking up spray for my photographic benefit, having deposited me on an offshore catamaran of questionable seaworthiness, at Esa ’Ala on Normanby Island in the D’Entrecasteaux group. Seconds later Conway took off and left me in isolation - but the Otter was due back on Saturday week.

Ansett Airways’ Short Sandringham VH-BRC Beachcomber on the lagoon at Lord Howe Island on November 10, 1959. This aircraft was operated by Antilles Air Boats as VP-LVE. After a period with Antilles Air Boats in the Virgin Islands, Beachcomber returned to the United Kingdom and is now preserved in the Southampton Hall of Aviation.
