Belgian pilot Capt Yves Dumortier has recently put winter-camouflaged Polikarpov Po-2 F-AZPO back in the air. He has a second one, in summer colours, awaiting certification.

Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S.2B XX899 low over Lossiemouth on March 5, 1994, marking the type’s retirement from service after 33 years with the RAF and FAA. Painted up for the occasion in a variety of former Buccaneer unit schemes, including Nos 12, 16, 216, 260 and 809 Sqns, the last nine aircraft made their final flights on March 27.

The wing of Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-4 Werknr 5709, recovered from the former USSR where the fighter crashed in 1943, at Jim Pearce’s Sussex airstrip in late March 1994. Sawn off just inboard of the Luftwaffe crosses, it is otherwise well-preserved - note the unblemished bright steel of the undercarriage legs. The Fw 190’s armoured nose ring is visible at the extreme left, with a belly panel in the foreground.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster PA474 has been given a major service and repainted in new markings, those of 9 Sqn’s W4964 WS-J Johnnie Walker, which flew from Russia on the first attack on the Tirpitz and completed over 100 operational sorties.

Shuttleworth/IWM Hawker Sea Hurricane IB Z7015 is nearing the end of its restoration to airworthiness: it was moved from its workshop to a roomier hangar on March 13, 1994 for the fitting of the wings. Z7015 is wears the colours of a Hurricane attached to 880 Sqn and flown from HMS Indomitable during World War Two. Note the yellow fin, worn by the carrier’s aircraft during Operation Pedestal in August 1942.

D.H. Tiger Moth T7793 being suspended under the glass dome of Croydon’s old airport terminal on February 26, 1994. It has been put on display by Westmead Business Group, which acquired the historic terminal in 1992 and has restored it as offices.
