P.Steinemann - Sekolah Penerbang
The ubiquitous North American T-6G Texan is among the types that have been used for training in Indonesia, this example being among the museum exhibits at Adisutjipto.
For some years, the TNI-AU relied upon Soviet equipment, including the MiG-15UTI.
One of the less common types seen at the Sekolah Penerbang is the PZL-104 Gelatik, of Polish origin but produced in Indonesia by Lipnur. It is also in use as a glider tug for the Air Force Academy.
The principal unit within the TNI-AU Flying School (Sekolah Penerbang) at Adisutjipto Air Base is the Wing Pendidikan No 1 or No 1 Training Wing, made up of ab initio, basic and advanced training squadrons. Respectively, these are No 101 Squadron Latih Mula with FFA AS 202 Bravo primary trainers; No 102 Latih Desar with Beechcraft T-34 Turbine Mentor basic trainers (shown) and No 103 Latih Lanjut with BAe Hawk Mk 53 advanced trainers. Note that the aircraft serial numbers are prefixed with letters matching the squadron's role - LM, LD and LL respectively.
Cessna light planes figure in the equipment used at Adisutjipto, including the Model 172 Skyhawk serving as a glider lug with the Akabri Bagian Udara (the Air Force Academy)

Additional Hawks delivered in 1984 sport a new red and white finish and all are to be repainted in due course.
One of the final batch of British Aerospace Hawks delivered to No 103 Squadron, showing the new finish with white-and-red fuselage, red tailplane and grey wings with yellow tips.
Following upon the early use of Japanese types, the Indonesian Air Force has used training aircraft from a variety of sources. American types have included the Vultee BT-13A Valiant; this example is in the museum collection of the Wing Pendidikan No I.

Training activities at Adisutjipto, now the home of the Sekolah Penerbang, began in 1945, when the Republic of Indonesia came into independent existence. Equipment in the first instance comprised abandoned and in some cases barely airworthy Japanese aircraft such as these Yokosuka K5Y1 training biplanes.
