Alenia-Aermacchi M346 Master

Alenia Aermacchi unveiled the first M-346 advanced jet trainer to be manufactured to baseline industrial configuration in a ceremony at the Venegono factory on April 10, 2008. This follows extensive flight testing of the two prototypes, which has enabled the final production configuration to be optimised. The third aircraft is structurally different to the prototypes. Changes include rationalising the distribution of wing spars and fuselage frames, more widespread use of composite and titanium parts, plus integrating a new main undercarriage and an enhanced flight control system. These changes have reduced the empty weight by around 1,543lb (700kg).

To date over 2,000 hours have been flown by the two M-346 prototypes and pre-production series aircraft.

Seen here during in-flight refuelling trials, the M-346 was conceived to satisfy the training requirements for pilots destined for the latest generation of combat aircraft such as the Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. Its chief characteristic is to allow students to acquire the crucial operational skills - such as aircraft handling at high energy levels and systems and mission management - on an aircraft having much lower costs. The first pre-series aircraft is about to be rolled out, and the Italian Air Force has granted a budgetary allocation for 15 examples.
