Canadian-built Mosquito B.XX KB162 carries the inscription New Glasgow Nova Scotia Canada on the nose. Is this a 'presentation' aircraft and did Canada have a parallel system to the RAF?

  • The SAAB-18 might have been a Hampden if Sweden had taken up its option to build the type under licence in 1939. The sole example is seen at Heston on delivery on 22 September 1938

  • The ultimate Airacobra was the P-39Q with a 0.5-in (12,7-mm) gun beneath each mainplane. The one illustrated here was 44-3474 but the serial has been censored.

  • Another print from the same source shows the cockpit of a Sopwith Triplane with a semi-circular attachment behind the single Vickers gun, presumably padding to protect the pilot's head in the event of a sudden stop.

  • Регистрационный номер: K5401

Hind K5401 of No.44 Squadron shows the details of the last of the light bomber biplanes. The gun sight doubled as a dive-bombing sight and there are wing-tip flare holders. The windows at the wing roots were presumably to give some light to the bomb-aimer while he was crouched in the bottom of the fuselage.
44 Squadron Hinds carried the squadron number in the appropriate Flight colour ahead of the roundel. Visible here is the window by the bomb-aiming position.

  • Регистрационный номер: LS326, G-AJVH

The anonymous Swordfish on page 21 of AM.1/97 was not LS326 as that was a Mk.II. It is a Mk.III with the radome removed in which the pilot's cockpit continued aft over the radar operator's position; in the Mks.I and II, the rear cockpit was a long opening starting just behind the pilot's headrest. LS326 is shown as '5A' for its part in the film Sink the Bismarck.

  • Регистрационный номер: NF389

It might possibly have been NF389, shown here in another of Jack Meaden's pictures as '5B' at Lee-on-Solent in August 1963

  • Imperial Russian Navy Grigorovich M.9 flying boats at an unidentified location in 1917 but probably in the Black Sea. Often considered moribund after the debacle of the war against Japan in 1904-5, the Czarist navy surprisingly had a division of seaplane carriers operating against the Turks during World War One.

  • A Flycatcher of No.402 Flight at Leuchars. The external Vickers gun was mounted so that in the event of a stoppage, the pilot could lean out and hammer the breech with the regulation hide-faced mallet. Presumably, gun heating was catered for by its proximity to the exhaust.

  • Регистрационный номер: X8275, G-AFCI

Peter Berry has sent in this laser print of X8275 Golden Hind. This Short S.26 was built for Imperial Airways as G-AFCI and impressed. The original was noted 'Caird's Shipyard', at Greenock on the Clyde and was probably taken in February 1941 when X8275 was there for maintenance. Greenock was a MU run by Scottish Aviation.
