  • An H6K2-L transport flying boat expropriated by Indonesian forces and photographed at Surabaya, Java, after capture by the Dutch. Note the blue segment added by the Dutch to the Indonesian red and white fuselage marking aft of the surrender cross.
This solitary Kawanishi H6K5 “Mavis” was used by the Indonesians immediately after the end of the Pacific war. It wears the markings of its new operators; unfortunately it was lost not long afterwards.

  • A flying shot of an H8K2, the main production model of the Emily, of which 112 were built. This aircraft belongs to the 851st Kokutai. Compare its nose turret with that of the earlier H8K1. The camouflage is standard Japanese Navy dark bronze green (very prone to fading) upper surfaces, with light grey below.

  • A Kawanishi H8K1 "Emily" of the Yokosuka Chinjufu Naval Air Corps (left) with, at right, a real rarity: a civil medium-range Yokosuka H5Y1. It was similar in design to the bigger H6K; only 20 were delivered during 1936-41.

  • An H8K3 of the 801st Kokutai has its engine covers removed in readiness for a long-range armed reconnaissance mission, while its 250kg bombs await loading. Of interest is the different tone of green on the upper fuselage.

  • An Emily of the 801st Kokutai is brought down by a US Navy Consolidated PB4Y. This photograph was taken from an American patrol bomber during a combat near the Marshall and Gilbert Islands in early 1944. With its strong defensive armament and resilient construction, the Emily proved quite a tough nut to crack.

  • An early H8K2 operated by the 801st Kokutai from Takuma on Shikoku, captured at war's end. It was taken to the USA and tested at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, providing information that would aid the Martin Seamaster project. In 1979 it returned to Japan; the only survivor, it is now displayed in Tokyo.

  • A rare view of the H8K2-L transport variant of the Emily, seen here on a beach in homeland Japan. The tail number reads "11Ko-21", which denotes the 11th Naval Air Arsenal, formerly the Hiro Naval Arsenal until October 1, 1941.

  • An early H8K1 Emily of the Yokosuka Chinjufu Naval Air Corps picks up speed before taking off from Japan's calm inland sea. Compare the H8K1's nose-turret design to that of the H8K2 and later models. Only 17 of this model were built, three preproduction and 14 production models.
