At the Boeing Plant at Wichita, Kansas, several hundred volunteer ex-Boeing employees are rebuilding B-29 44-69972 back to airworthiness in the very factory where it was built in 1945. Owned by the United States Air Museum, the B-29 was recovered from China Lake, California, in 1998, and arrived at Wichita in April 2000. It is hoped that it will fly again in 2004.

THE APPEARANCE OF the Zogling primary glider, designed in Germany by Alexander Lippisch in the 1920s, greatly facilitated the teaching of ab initio glider pilots, and this skeletal machine with its stark simplicity was widely copied. In Britain, R.F. Dagnall produced the Dagling, with dimensions based on the Imperial system rather than the metric, and this, too, was copied by amateur builders, all of these generic machines still being called Daglings.
The two primary gliders seen here are both probably amateur-built Daglings, but little or nothing is known about them.
The glider in what appears to be an orchard seems to follow the pattern quite closely, apart from its distinctive tall rudder with its curved trailing edge, which contrasts with the craft's otherwise angular lines. The designation "JB1" is painted on the rudder, and on the back of the postcard is written: "The JB1 Dagling Type Primary Glider. wt 195lb, span 33ft. Photo taken 5.6.37". I'd love to know who "JB" was, and what adventures he had on his creation.

The other machine is of rather cruder construction, and has square-cut wingtips which reveal the deep wing section. It was photographed in countryside rather more suitable for gliding, with shallow hills; and in the middle distance, beneath the tailboom structure, may be seen what looks like a Bessoneau-type portable fabric hangar, possibly of First World War vintage. The glider seems to be held in a form of supporting framework, perhaps to enable the pupil to use it as a sort of ground trainer before essaying free flights.
Unfortunately there are no clues on the back of this picture. Any suggestions or, preferably, positive identifications, would be most welcome.Самолёты на фотографии: Slingsby T.3 Dagling - Великобритания - 1930
