Charles J. Thompson's painting of 825 Squadron Swordfish W5984 flown by Lt Cdr Eugene Esmonde DSO under attack by a Fw 190 of 9./JG2 on February 12, 1942. His aircraft shredded by cannon fire, Esmonde led six Swordfish in the attack and was awarded a posthumous VC.

Spitfires escorted 217 Squadron Beauforts from Thorney Island in the attacks; Mk VB AD185 of No 19 Sqn, seen here over the North Sea in November 1941, is representative of the Spitfires which took part.
Spitfire VB AD185 of 19 Squadron was one of six "rear cover" aircraft which came out to meet the three returning Beauforts and the twelve 152 Squadron Spitfires. The pilot is Sgt Sokol.

Bombs exploding on Herdla airfield and flak bursts in the water on December 26, 1941, during Operation Hardboiled, which aimed to draw the German fleet north to defend Norway. Two Blenheims collided and the six crew were lost. The airfield was cratered and a workshop destroyed.
