  • The German aircraft kept at Biggin Hill before the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon was opened seldom came out of their hangar but the FW 190 did emerge, with the He 111 and Bf 109, on a few occasions. Although no markings are discernible, this appears to be the aircraft now in the Battle of Britain Museum at Hendon.

  • Регистрационный номер: AS-00, WN355

Bob Ogden tells us that a Fairey Gannet AS.1 can be seen preserved at the Museum Abri Satriamandala in Jakarta where it was photographed by the late Norman Wiltshire. An order for eighteen Gannets was placed for Angkatan Laut (the Indonesian naval air arm) in January 1959 and given the serials AS-00 to AS-17. The example shown carries AS-00, which was originally WN355 and had been reconditioned as a ground instructional airframe before being shipped to Indonesia from Birkenhead in June 1959.

  • Регистрационный номер: WL430

On 16th February 1954, Meteor T.7 WL430 of No.26 Squadron yawed on take-off at Oldenburg and the wing hit the ground. The aircraft cart-wheeled but the crew survived.

  • Регистрационный номер: WP346, XE392, XE394

Wyvern S.4 WP346 of No.831 Squadron veered to starboard after trapping the wire aboard Ark Royal on 22nd February 1957. It ended in contact with the wing of Sea Hawk XE394 of No. 804 Squadron. WP346 went to Westlands for repair and was stored until sold for scrap in September 1959.

  • Fairey Firefly AS.5s parked outside the Fairey flight shed at Hamble during the summer of 1955. Some had been converted to T.5s but no full serials can be identified in this photograph. These aircraft were awaiting reconditioning, possibly prior to conversion to U.9 drones.

  • Регистрационный номер: K2978

Hawker Hart K2978 served with No.601 (County of London) Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force, from April 1933 to September 1935 at Hendon. The winged sword on the fin is actually facing the opposite way from the approved squadron badge.

  • Регистрационный номер: K5778

Walrus K5778 was from the initial production batch of twelve Walrus Is. It was delivered to Lee-on-Solent for issue to No.444 Flight in May 1936 which was absorbed into No. 702 (Catapult) Flight in July 1936. K5778 was occasionally embarked in HMS Nelson until February 1937 when it was damaged by C Turret being trained to port. Repaired, it took up residence at Lee-on-Solent, serving with No. 765 Squadron in 1939.

  • Регистрационный номер: VM307

Avro Anson C.19 displays a rather unusual way of marking its serial number, making it look more like a code. This aircraft flew between 1947 and 1960 with, successively, No.58 Squadron, Station Flights at Benson and Wyton and then Technical Training Command Communications Flight.

  • The Breda Ba.19 was a single-seat aerobatic trainer and 41 were delivered to the Regia Aeronautica in 1931/32. They were attached to fighter units for training purposes and were also the aircraft used by the Pattuglia Folle aerobatic team. The engine was an Alfa-Romeo Lynx.

  • Регистрационный номер: N120

The Short Cromarty was built to Specification N.3(b) to succeed the wartime F-boats but the end of the First World War put back the programme and N120, the only one of three prototypes to fly, did not make its first flight until 11th April 1921. This photograph appears to have been taken at St.Mary's in the Isles of Scilly during trials in August 1922 which resulted in the boat going aground on a reef on 5th September and being broken up on site.

  • Регистрационный номер: A85-17

Another airframe found in a hangar at RAAF Amberley that has been used for the paint-bashers' A-Levels is Winjeel A85-17. As the serials for the main batch of Winjeels began at A85-364, in order to baffle the Soviet Union, the possible reason is that it is ground instructional airframe Winjeel No.17. The colour scheme is unique, like that on the Sabre illustrated in the last issue. The photo was taken in 1988.

  • Photographing side-views of some types almost made them invisible but enough can be seen to identify this as a Swedish Farman HF 20 built by Sodertalje Werkstaders Aviatikavdelning, which became the current Scania-Vabis factory. Power was provided by a Gnome 7A rotary engine and it went into service in 1914.
