The first Harrier GR Mk 5 effected a successful maiden flight from Dunsfold on 30 April, 1985. The first flight, with chief test pilot Mike Snelling at the controls, lasted one hour. Note the "deep strokes" beneath the fuselage, which will eventually be replaced by 25-mm Aden cannon.
Following the reference to the high-altitude Spitfire VC in the "Warbirds" article, March issue at page 135, Andrew Thomas has provided this photograph of the aircraft in question, BR114, showing the four-blade Rotol propeller and the sealing and rubbing-down of panel joints, etc.
The skunk insignia on SR-71A 64-17955.
