Shorts SC.7 Skyvan/Skyliner

The prototype S.C.7 Skyvan, G-ASCN, seen here at the SBAC show at Farnborough in September 1964, was initially fitted with Continental piston engines for its first flight on January 17, 1963, but was re-engined four months later with Turbomeca Astazou turboprops and rebranded the Turbo Skyvan. Note the original blunt nose.
By the time of the 1968 SBAC show at Farnborough that September, problems with the Skyvan’s Astazou engines in “hot and high" conditions had led to the fitting of American Garrett AiResearch TP331 turboprops on production aircraft instead, these being Skyvan Series 3s. Seen here is Series 3 N4917 of Wien Consolidated Airlines, one of five Skyvans at the ’68 show.

The real "workhorse" of the SOAF is the Skyvan 3M seen in these photos operating under what are probably the most punishing conditions in the world. The Skyvan flight of the SOAF's Air Support Squadron is manned by seconded RAF personnel and (mostly British ex-service) mercenaries. Some 220 of the British serving with the Omani forces are seconded personnel, including 100 from the Special Air Services Regiment, and these have been told by the UK Ministry of Defence to avoid participating in operations likely to embarass HM government.
Newly completed and gleaming, Skyvan 3M G-454/E taxies out following the official hand-over ceremony at Bournemouth on 19 April 1991 to take Ghanaian AF officials on a short flight over the local area.
The Series 3 Skyvan, with Garrett TPE331 turboprops was a much more developed airframe than the early SC.7 variants. This head-on aspect of a Ghana Air Force Series 3M shows the H-D concept of supplemental lift struts and stub wings for the undercarriage to advantage.

Soon after dawn on a Sunday morning last September the Skyliner and one of the Skyvans are seen en route from Poole Harbour to Bournemouth.
First flown in 1963, the Skyvan and its derivatives are still in widespread civil and military service around the world. Among the many air arms flying it is the Royal Air Force of Oman, the biggest user of the type in the world with 13 SC-7 Skyvans and three Seavans (seen here).
The Shorts SC7 Skyvan is used extensively as a platform for parachute jumps. This example, OE-FDI (c/n SH1932), is operated by the Czech company Pink Aviation in a very distinctive paint scheme and is pictured at Zweibrucken, Germany in June 2019.

One of four operated by Pink Aviation Services based at Vienna in Austria, it was built for the Botswana Defence Force - Air Wing and sold to a private operator in 1994.
Hunting-operated, Luxembourg registered Short Skyvan 3M LX-JUL is one of two which have taken-over the parachute jump training role from the RAF balloons following the recent retirement of the latter. Paratroops are seen here boarding the aircraft at Farnborough on June 22, 1995 for a local drop over Hankley Common.
In recent times the Skyvan has found a niche as a parachute platform.
Invicta Aviation, which operates the only two Shorts Skyvans remaining on the UK register, 30-year old G-BEOL and G-PIGY, has recently upgraded the aircraft, fitting new five-bladed propellers to replace the old three-bladed ones, which reduces noise, as the tips are no longer supersonic. The aircraft are mostly leased out to parachute clubs and both are seen here on May 19, 2007 at Langar, Nottinghamshire, where they were temporarily based for the 'Langar Boogie 2007' skydiving event, although it was largely washed out by very poor weather.
