The Island Aeroplane Co’s Antonov An-2 D-FOFM, still wearing the markings of the East German Air Force - where it was the Chief of Staffs personal aircraft. It has visited several UK airfields since it arrived at Sandown in February 1996.

Dutch Dakota Association Douglas DC-4 ZS-NUR/PH-DDS arrived at Schiphol on May 5, 1996 from South Africa. Its maintenance is being carried out in the UK by Air Atlantique; it was to attend the Classic Airliner Fly-in at Lydd on June 30, and will be at the International Air Tattoo at Fairford on July 20-21.

Hosted by the Portuguese Air Force’s (PAF) No 301 (Tiger) Squadron at Beja in Southern Portugal in the week beginning May 20, the 1996 Nato Tiger Meet for Tiger-badged units worldwide was a success despite an aerial collision between a Hawk and an F-16 during the air display. The event featured various participants including the Italian Air Force’s last 21 Sqn Starfighter MM.6716/53-21, shown, and the PAF Historic Flight de Havilland Tiger Moth 102, painted in special markings for the occasion.

The restored fuselage of Supermarine Southampton N9899, complete with newly-installed timber walkway, on display in the main aircraft hall of the RAF Museum, Hendon, on May 24, 1996. The walkway provides a view of the twin cockpits and gun positions and, via cutaway planking, the navigator’s cabin.

This open-cockpit Slingsby T.31 glider, recovered from a carpet factory in Northern Ireland, is to be restored to flying condition by the Camphill Vintage Gliding Group (CVGG), formed by the Tideswell-based Derbyshire & Lancashire Gliding Club last year to mark its 60th. anniversary. Along with a T.21, it will be put back in the air to “give a new generation of pilots the thrill of flying with the wind in their hair”, says the CVGG. It is hoped that both aircraft will also be used in the club’s programme to give members of the public trial lessons over the Peak District countryside. The CVGG is interested in hearing from airframe fitters, aeromodellers or woodworkers who would like to help in the restorations - contact Ian Dunkley via the club on 01298 871270.
