Seen at the French Air Force open day at Cambrai on June 18, 1988 was Dewoitine D.520 No 603. Restored to static condition and stored at Cambrai, the fighter provided spares for No 90, the last flying example, which crashed at Vannes in 1986.

The airfield scene looked a bit of a battlefield when Aeroplane visited Yeovilton - it will look even more so when the exhibition opens.
Sections of wartorn French airfields cover the exhibition’s central area, complete with sandbags, mud and shellholes (visitors will not need to bring Wellington boots, though). Here the museum’s Sopwith Camel, Triplane, Pup, Spad XIII and Albatros D Va replicas, together with Robin Bowes’ Fokker Dr I replica G-BEFR, are displayed against a vast, sombre backdrop mural of the Western Front. For more theatrical effect the Spad will be standing on its nose as if crashed and the Sopwith Triplane will be suspended from the ceiling - “but we believe it will still satisfy the purist”, says Mottram. Lighting will remain at normal levels, permitting fairly easy photography.

This Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was recently recovered from the Sognefjord in Norway, where it had ditched 45yr before. A team of Norwegian Navy divers lifted it, in remarkably complete condition, from a depth of almost 80ft. More details soon.

Dramatic proof that Grapevine parts-requests bring results: Handley Page Hampden P4536, under static restoration by the Canadian Museum of Flight and Transportation (CMFT) in British Columbia, now has a nose section following a plea published in our February 1987 issue. Sheffield reader and restorer Alan Downing saw the request and remembered that the Warplane Wreck Recovery Group at High Ercall had a nose section on loan from the Cosford Aerospace Museum. He sent a photo of it to his contacts at the CMFT and thus set the ball rolling: the nose section arrived there on May 24, 1988. The Hampden, pulled out of the sea off Vancouver Island 2yr ago, is the world’s sole substantially complete example.

Brian Woodford's de Havilland D.H.90 Dragonfly undergoing engine runs at Lee-on-Solent in mid-June 1988. Nearing the end of a 2yr restoration by Ron Souch, the aircraft should have flown by the time this issue is published.
