Usually at least one of the many daily Taipei-Hong Kong services is undertaken by Mandarin, normally using either MD-11 or Boeing 747SP aircraft, although Mandarin’s new 747-400 can also be seen on the route. Seen taxiing for departure at Kai Tak is N4508H, one of three 747SP-09s operated by Mandarin on lease from China Airlines.

Outside of North America, fast expanding Great China Airlines is one of the largest operators of the Dash 8. Although the airline started with four DHC-8 Series 100 aircraft it has now opted for the larger -300, 11 of which are already in use, with orders for more. Unlike some of Taiwan’s other carriers, the airline has declared it has no interest in operating international services. Srs 311 B-15215 is seen on approach to Tapei/Sungshan.

Including both the aircraft on its inventory and those on order, Formosa Airlines operates five different types from three European manufacturers. The Fokker 50 is the largest type currently operated, though the company is about to join the jet age with the acquisition of two Fokker 100s. B-12272, delivered to the airline in January 1995, is seen here on approach to Tapei/Sungshan

Apart from a recently acquired Boeing 757, Makung Airline’s fleet consists solely of British Aerospace products; a pair of 748s and five 146-300s. The quietness of the latter type no doubt provides welcome relief for those who reside in the apartment blocks around Taipei’s Sungshan airport where B-1777 is seen taxiing for take-off.

Considering Sungshan airport’s close proximity to the city centre, the rather noisy MD-80 series aircraft seems a strange choice by Far Eastern Air Transport. Illustrated at the holding point at Sungshan is MD-82 B-28021 which was delivered to FAT in 1995.
