Photographed visiting Ching Chuan Kang is C-119L 51-8031/3212. It is based at Pingtung with 103 Squadron, whose badge is visible on the nose and which is the last operator in the world of the Packet. Note the Squadron’s blue trim below the cockpit and on the spinner, whilst on the fin is the Camel insignia of the 10th Transport Group.

Although headquartered at Chiayi air base the SAR Squadron has a detachment of two Sikorsky S-70Cs at Sungshan where they are also used in the VIP transport role. 7011 is one of 14 delivered in this smart blue and white scheme - the type also serves in the RoC Navy, ten examples of the S-70C(M)-1 Thunderhawk (SH-60B Seahawk) being delivered for shipboard deployment aboard FFG-7 frigates.

Of the four former China Airlines Boeing 727-100s which were taken on charge by the RoCAF, only two remain in service with the VIP Transport Squadron at Sungshan, including 2721 seen here on approach to Sungshan.

There is a total of 16 C-130 Hercules equipping nos 101 and 102 Squadrons at Pingtung. Seen here on approach to Taipei/Sungshan is C-130H 1311 of 101 Squadron. The RoCAF has also acquired an additional aircraft modified by AIDC to EC-130H ELINT configuration

All of the Air Force Academy’s AT-3s, including 75-6014/0814 seen here, are in this attractive red/white/blue colour scheme which, it is believed, was initially adopted for the ‘Thunder Tigers’ aerobatic display team.

Emerging from its hardened shelter at Ching Chuan Kang, Ching-Kuo 82-8011/1403 of the 3rd TFW is armed with a pair of TC-1 Sky Sword infra-red seeking missiles and is carrying a centre-line fuel tank.

A number of two-seat Ching-Kuos have been produced for conversion training. Note that the cockpit canopy hinges to the side, unlike the single-seat variant which is hinged at the rear. Like all Ching-Kuos, 82-8009/1603, is totally devoid of unit insignia and is believed to be the first RoCAF type to feature toned down national insignia.

On the approach to its home base at Taipei’s Sungshan domestic airport is Fokker 50 5002. It is one of three Fokker 50s serving with the VIP Transport Squadron, together with a number of Beech 1900Cs.

The RoCAF has upgraded its fleet of S-2E Trackers to S-2T Turbo Tracker configuration, including Garrett TPE-331-15AW turboprops with Dowty advanced technology four-bladed propellers plus a new and improved avionics fit. Sharkmouthed S-2T 2222 seen here is one of 32 to undergo conversion under a USN FMS contract, the first two being completed by Grumman and the remainder locally in Taiwan using kits.

Photographed at the holding point at Sungshan airport is Beech 1900C 1907, one of 12 of the type delivered to RoCAF. In the VIP role, the type is known in RoCAF service as the UC-25.

Taiwan was, and still is, the largest operator of the F-5, with as many as 423 of the type being taken on charge. Displaying the badge of the 5th TFW on the fin is F-5E 60482/5212. Note the camouflaged hardened shelter in the background.

TF-104G Starfighter, 1-3082/4178, of the 11th Fighter Group, 2nd Tactical Fighter Wing is one of the few two-seat Starfighters still flying and is armed with AIM-9J Sidewinders. It is seen here on approach to its home base of Hsinchu, which is now the sole remaining Starfighter base.
