G-21/JRF/OA-9/OA-13 Goose
- OA-9, легкий транспортный самолет для ВВС армии на базе G-21A с моторами R-985-SB2, 7 мест;
- OA-13, аналог OA-9 с моторами R-985-AN1;
- JRF-1, аналог OA-9 для флота;
- JRF-1A, вариант JRF-1 с фотоаппаратами и устройством для буксировки мишеней;
- JRF-2, спасательный самолет для Береговой охраны;
- JRF-3, аналог JRF-2 с автопилотом и антиобледенителем;
- JRF-4, легкий противолодочный самолет, бомбы до 227 кг;
- JRF-5, наиболее массовый транспортный вариант с моторами R-985-AN12, состоял на вооружении также в ВВС армии (как OA-13B) и ВВС Великобритании (как "Гуз" I), выпускался специальный спасательный JRF-5G для Береговой охраны;

NC16910 FAMILY AMPHIBIAN: Used by several wealthy owners in the States as a family conveyance and as a means of travelling up to business in New York, the Grumman amphibian is a machine with a very definite place in the American market. With two Wasp Juniors the cruising speed (on 75 per cent power at 9,600 ft.) is 193 m.p.h. and the full-load ceiling on one engine is given as 14,000ft. Not bad for an amphibian. There is now a seaplane "season" in the States and the Grumman makes the best of both elements.

Grumman G-12A goose "W2H" of the Royal Naval Observer Training School at Piarco, off Trinidad in 1944. A number of these sturdy little amphibians served with this unit. First flown in 1937, the Goose was powered by a pair of 450 h.p. Pratt & Whitney Wasp Junior radials, which gave it a maximum speed of 200 m.p.h. Also used for communications and air-sea rescue work, the Goose had range of 800 - 1,050 miles and was used by the RAF (No 24 Squadron), FAA and the Air Transport Auxiliary. A total of 62 served with the British Forces, 12 of which were supplied under Lend-Lease.

This may serve as a clue to MV993’s employ, as ATA were known to have at least one Goose.

Extensive hydro-ski tests were undertaken using various types, including this Grumman JRF-5 fitted with a single hydro-ski on a fixed strut. During alighting a hydro-ski presents only a small area for impact; as the aircraft decelerates the ski takes more of the load until it submerges and the aircraft settles gently on to the surface.
