  • Richard Jowett completed the restoration of his CZL Super Aero 45 G-APRR in July 1990. The Czech twin is now resplendent in an accurate white-and-maroon colour scheme - a far cry from its former incarnation as "half a Heinkel".

  • Seen tethered to a car for an engine ground-test at Raron, Switzerland on July 21, 1990, this rare Mignet H.M.8 replica has recently been completed and flown by Walter Haug. Powered by an original 20 h.p. Poinsard engine, H.M.8 HB-YEI took Antique Aircraft Association of Switzerland member Haug some 1,800 man-hours to build. The prototype was designed and built in 1928 by Henri Mignet, the creator of the better-known H.M.14 Pou-du-Ciel or Flying Flea, and it formed the subject of the first edition of his influential book on homebuilt ultralights, Le sport de l'air.

"I don't call it a replica ”, says Beach, "as the plans were sold for amateur construction - so it s just rather late in arriving!” With Beach are (left) Dan Smith, a founder-member of Dunstable's London Gliding Club and the last man to fly a Hols there, in the mid-Thirties, and (right) Geoffrey Stephenson, who was the first to soar a glider from England to France in 1939.
